In the first quarter of 2022, the electronic systems design industry sales increased by 12.1% year-on-year
On July 11, 2022, the Electronic Design Market Data Report (EDMD) announced that electronic Systems design (ESD) industry sales increased by 12.1% from $3,157.7 million in the first quarter of 2021 to $3,540.5 million in the first quarter of 2022. The moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters with the previous four, is up 14.5 percent.
Walden C. hines, executive sponsor of SEMI's Electronic Design Market Data report, said: "The industry continued to see double-digit year-over-year sales growth in the first quarter of 2022, with quarterly sales reaching a record $3,5405 million. Computer-aided Engineering (CAE), printed circuit boards and multi-chip modules, and semiconductor intellectual property and services grew during the quarter. Geographically, sales grew in the Americas, Japan and Asia Pacific."
The companies tracked in the EDMD report employed 51,328 people globally in the first quarter of 2022, up 4.7 percent from 49,024 in the first quarter of 2021 and up 0.2 percent from the fourth quarter of 2021.

Sales by product and application category - year-over-year change
Computer-aided engineering (CAE) sales increased 14.8% to $1,118.2 million. The fourth-quarter moving average was up 12.5%.
Integrated circuit physical design and verification sales fell 7.5 percent to $631.2 million. The fourth-quarter moving average fell 2.5 percent.
Sales of printed circuit boards and multi-chip modules (PCB and MCM) increased 1.4% to $293.3 million. The fourth quarter moving average was up 11.4%.
Semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) sales increased 23.7% to $1,376.5 million. The fourth-quarter moving average was up 26.5%.
Services sales increased 22.7% to $121.4 million. The fourth quarter moving average was up 24.9%.
Sales by region - year-on-year change
The Americas was the largest region by sales in the first quarter of 2022, with $1.522.7 billion of electronic systems design products and services purchased in the Americas during the quarter, a YoY increase of 18.5%. The fourth-quarter moving average is up 18%.
Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) purchased $434.1 million in electronic systems design products and services in the first quarter of 2022, a 3% YoY decrease. The moving average for the fourth quarter rose 8.1 per cent.
Japan's purchases of electronic systems design products and services increased by 1.8% YoY to $263.5 million. The fourth-quarter moving average was up 2.5 per cent.
Asia Pacific procured $1.320.3 billion in electronic systems design products and services in the first quarter of 2022, up 13.2% YoY. The fourth-quarter moving average was up 15.6 per cent.
